Volvo Car Malaysia ‘Recharges’ Its Line-up With The Facelifted S90 Recharge T8

Although the Volvo S90 still looks as good as the day it jumped off the drawing board, it has not stopped Volvo Car Malaysia from updating its contender in the premium executive segment. Now named the S90 Recharged T8, Volvo is looking to steal more wallets from the German marques.

Built on Volvo’s Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform and powered by Volvo’s Drive-E powertrain, the S90 Recharge T8 is equipped with a T8 Twin Engine and a rechargeable lithium-ion battery. The supercharged and turbocharged 2-litre four-cylinder engine, together with the rear-axle mounted electric motor, can produce 407hp and 640Nm of torque.

Mated to an eight-speed Geartronic automatic transmission with all-wheel drive, the S90 T8 gets to 100kph from a standstill in a blistering 4.9 seconds. Top speed, however, has been restricted to just 180kph, in line with Volvo’s push for better road safety.

Like the XC90, the S90 Recharge T8 carries on the distinctive Volvo design language, highlighted with the ‘Thor’s Hammer headlights. This blend of modern minimalist design continues with the vertical chrome grille bearing the Volvo Iron Mark. Muscular shoulder lines with 19-inch 10-spoke alloy wheels visually lower the S90 Recharge T8, giving it a long and sleek silhouette.

Over on the rear, a far more distinctive taillight design on a flat-ish boot lid is well-executed, with the bumpers integrating twin tailpipes on either side. Customers will have the option to choose from five distinct colours, namely Bright Silver, Crystal White Pearl, Onyx Black, Platinum Grey and Thunder Grey.

The modern minimalism seen on the exterior is further exaggerated over on the interior design. The straightforward design is pleasing to the eye, dominated by a 9.0-inch portrait-styled central touchscreen and an open-pore wood finish on the dash and centre console. Vertical air blades on each side of the touchscreen, perforated front seats and knurled metal finish on the start/stop switch and drive mode selector raises the bar on elegant aesthetics. With the unique Orrefors Crystal gear selector, anyone would feel very special when in the S90 Recharge T8.

While it may be simplistic, the interior hides some pretty impressive technology. Quick and easy to navigate, the central touchscreen controls all of the car’s functions, such as climate control system and safety systems. Drivers will also be treated to a crisp 12.3-inch TFT digital drivers display and a proper heads-up display projected onto the windscreen. USB ports upfront allow both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity. At the same time, a 1,400-watt 19-speaker Bowers and Wilkins surround sound system provide an incredibly clear and immersive listening experience.

As with any Volvo, the S90 Recharge T8 has a grocery list of safety features that make crashing it almost inconceivable. Among the key safety technology developed by Volvo include Blind Spot Information Systems (BLIS), City Safety, Cross-Traffic Alert, Front and Rear Collision Warning and Mitigation Support, as well as adaptive cruise control with Lane Keeping Aid and Pilot Assist, just to name a few. Moreover, the S90 Recharge T8 comes with a 360-degree surround-view camera system with all-round parking sensors to aid drivers in parking or manoeuvring in tight spaces.

Priced at RM358,888, the S90 Recharge T8 is now at RM339,315 after sales tax exemption (on-the-road, without insurance). It will be available for viewing at all authorised Volvo dealers nationwide. Additionally, the T5 variant, now priced at RM328,888 (before sales tax exemption), will be available from June 2021 onwards. The sales tax exempted pricing for the T5 variant is subject to a later announcement. Stay logged in for updates.
