When the government announced that movie theatres are allowed to return to operation on 1 July, movie fans and cinema operators were overjoyed.
 
And it seems that everyone’s excitement to return to the cinemas and savour the smell of popcorn really shows as ‘Train to Busan 2: Peninsula’ managed to rake in over seven figures over the weekend.

Unexpected success 

According to The Star, the sequel took the top spot at the Malaysian weekend box office and made a whopping RM4.1 million.
 
It also broke the record for the highest sneak preview for a Korean film in Malaysia, with RM520,000 collected in total on 15 July.
 

‘Peninsula’ is one of the most highly anticipated films of 2020 and became the first new blockbuster to be screened in cinemas post-MCO.
 
The South Korean zombie film starring Gang Dong-won, Lee Jung-hyun, Lee Re, and Hae-hyo Kwon has topped box office charts not only in Malaysia, but also South Korea, Taiwan and Singapore.
 
The follow-up to the highly rated ‘Train to Busan’ takes place four years after the first zombie apocalypse in South Korea and centers around Jung-seok, a former soldier who was ordered to return to the devastated Korean peninsula for a special mission.
