Monsters At Work: 5 Types Of Work-From-Home 'Monsters' Typically Found In Malaysia

We know you're one of these monsters.

'Monsters At Work', the Disney and Pixar spinoff of the beloved 'Monsters, Inc.' franchise, is premiering today (7 July) exclusively on Disney+ Hotstar!

The Disney+ Original animated series takes place the day after the Monsters, Incorporated power plant started harvesting the laughter of children to fuel the city of Monstropolis.

With new episodes released every Wednesday, the series follows the story of Tylor Tuskmon, an eager young monster who graduated top of his class at Monsters University and always dreamed of becoming a Scarer until he lands a job at Monsters, Incorporated, and discovers that scaring is out and laughter is in.

After Tylor is temporarily reassigned to the Monsters, Inc. Facilities Team (MIFT), he must work alongside a misfit bunch of mechanics while setting his sights on becoming a Jokester.

Which 'monster' are you?

As most Malaysians are working from home these days, our working styles have all evolved!

Our comic illustrator friend Daniel Mok (whom we talked to before, and you can check out his interview here) has created five “work from home” monster personalities inspired by that WFH lifestyle.

Are you a “Background Wizard” or the “Eternal Muter”? Let us know if you see yourself (or your colleagues!) here.

#1 Wizard of Backgrounds

Change background like change clothes.
Signature personality: The one who keeps changing to fancy and outlandish backgrounds.

Your virtual background says it all! You keep it interesting all the time no matter the call - it could be the seashores of Bali today and a trippy sci-fi background tomorrow. You have a special background for birthdays that you bring out just to give your teammates the best virtual birthday surprise! Always a conversation starter, you are the Wizard of Backgrounds.

#2 Lagger Zombie

Signature personality: The one who's got tech issues!

When it’s time for that weekly call you’re forever having connection issues. Don’t you just hate when it’s your turn to speak, your microphone suddenly stops working and surprise, surprise, the Internet starts lagging? Don’t worry, it happens to the best of us - and besides, some things can always just have been via email.

#3 Magic Multitasker

You're probably a superhuman, TBH.
Signature personality: The one who is always doing a million other things around the house while attending to work tasks.

There are a million and one tasks on your to-do list, yet your brain can mystifyingly compartmentalise, prioritise and actualise to get them all done! Are you ironing AND making lunch for your kids while working? How do you do it all? Kudos to you, Magic Multitasker (and teach us your ways)!

#4 Eternal Muter

'Sorry, no comments'.
Signature personality: The one who is permanently on mute and off-camera, but is actually there listening to everything.

Are you there, Eternal Muter? It’s hard to tell when we can’t see or hear you, and for all we know you could be secretly sneaking in an episode of your favourite Korean drama. Somehow you’re still the one who knows exactly what happened at the end of every call, so maybe you’re a mind reader too!

#5 Pyjamas Impostor

Work mode at the top, party mode at the bottom.
Signature personality: Business on top, party at the bottom? It’s a look.
Mastered the art of working from your bed too, have you? Hey now, no judgement here! There’s nothing like wanting to be comfy when we’re stuck at home all day every day. Just… don’t forget to put on some pants before you stand up if you’re on a call with your video on.

So, which one are you?

For us personally, we are a mix of between Wizard of Background and the Eternal Muter: we typically mute ourselves in meetings and when we have no choice but to show our face, we will 'entertain' every one with our backgrounds.

Now that you know what your work monster personality is, have you seen what that might actually look like in real life? Check out the amazing Julianne Sebastian and queenofluna as they transform themselves into Val and Sully!
