The Grammy Awards is the music industry’s biggest night as it recognises the best of the best. Many artists have earned better credibility after receiving this prestigious award. Although the 2017 line-up looks promising, a few of the industry’s big names have decided to skip the night, namely Justin Bieber, Drake and Kanye West who, by the way, are all nominated in several award categories this year.
According to insiders
, both Bieber and Drake feel that the Grammys is no longer relevant in today’s music world. This has been a recurring complaint faced by the awards in recent years, especially after last year’s issue when Frank Ocean, whose album was hyped up as the best album of 2016, didn’t even submit his work for consideration. He felt that the Grammys is “a dinosaur and does not represent young, black artists”.
Sharing the same sentiment as Ocean, West said, “That institution certainly has nostalgic importance. It just doesn’t seem to be representing very well for people who come from where I come from, and hold down what I hold down.”

“I think the infrastructure of the awarding system and the nomination system and screening system is dated. I’d rather this be my Colin Kaepernick moment for the Grammys than sit there in the audience,” he added. However, other sources
revealed that he also needs some personal time to calm down the past few rocky months he’s had.
West is currently holding eight nominations for the Grammys this year. Bieber has been nominated for four Grammys and eight for Drake. Despite these three’s no-show, other big names including Adele, Bruno Mars, John Legend and Carrie Underwood are still scheduled to perform.
