Entering the month of October, all we can think of is a season that is not even part of our history and culture – Halloween.
But it does not mean that we’re not allowed to embrace all things scary, right? Well, if you haven’t noticed already, Malaysians seem to love horror. Just look at all the local horror films that were released this year alone.
For some reason, we like being scared out of our wits – except this writer.
We’re not sure why, but we’re not here to start a thesis on why the horror genre is so popular in Malaysia and Asia.
In conjunction with this spooky month, it is only logical to revisit some of the movies that gave us nightmares for weeks.
Now, these masterpieces may or may not involve ghosts and evil spirits, but they all have one thing in common: there is something coming after us and we need to run.
So here are several movies under the horror and thriller genre that is perfect to help you convince that scaredy-cat friend of yours to watch with you. Just tell them that it will be worth it.
The Sandman (2017)
Do you still remember your worst nightmare when you were a kid? In ‘The Sandman’, a little girl’s nightmare comes to life in the form of a Sandman, a terrifying monster that attacks anyone who wants to hurt her. Sounds more like a guardian angel, doesn’t it? But hey, if a shape-shifting Sandman appears in your bedroom in the middle of the night, what are you going to do?
A reboot of the clown that gave nearly everyone in our generation a genuine clown phobia, Pennywise returns. Set in Derry, Maine, a group of young outcasts face an ancient form-shifting evil that appears in the sewer every 27 years to prey on children. Literally every kid’s worst nightmare! During one hot summer that turns into a horrifying ordeal, the friends must come together to overcome their own personal fears and fight the murderous clown who is just thirsty for blood.
The Nun (2018)
Set within the ‘Conjuring’ universe, ‘The Nun’ tells the story of a demonic nun, Valak. When she was living as a young nun at a monastery in Romania, she had decided to take her own life. Following the tragedy, a priest with a haunted past and a nun in her novitiate are sent by the Vatican to investigate. As they enter deeper, they uncover the order’s secret that is unholy. They are then forced to convince Valak and an evil force, risking their lives, faith and souls.
This familiar 2018 title is part of the ‘Halloween’ film series, which is a sequel to ‘Halloween’ released in 1978. After surviving the infamous killer Michael Myers for 40 years, Laurie Store has to relive her worst nightmare on a fateful Halloween night. The vicious murder managed to escape captivity during a bus transfer that goes wrong. Of course, he goes straight for his biggest victim – who is still alive. Laurie must now prepare for the final showdown with the masked madman. Is she ready for him this time?
