Malaysian Movie 'Barbarian Invasion' Bags Highly-Coveted Trophy At International Film Festival
Over the years, we've seen more and more local movies picking up awards at film festivals all around the world (which is a testament that we can make kick-ass movies too!).

We can now add another local movie to that list.

Top of the mountain

Well done, 'Barbarian Invasion'!
Malaysian movie 'Barbarian Invasion' made the country proud when it picked up the Jury Grand Prix trophy at the Golden Goblet Awards, which is part of the 24th Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF), New Straits Times reported.

The movie, directed by award-winning filmmaker Tan Chui Mui and produced by her company Da Huang Pictures, edged out 12 other finalists to win the Golden Goblet Awards, the most coveted prize at the SIFF.

"A total of six filmmakers are involved in this project, including Chui Mui. It is specially aimed at creating stories that are out-of-the-ordinary, and I'm glad she did a splendid job," the film's producer, Yang Jin, was quoted as saying.

The team spent two months to film 'Barbarian Invasion' in Kemaman, Terengganu, she added.

She added that the team is delighted that it received great feedback from the viewers.

'Barbarian Invasion' tells the story of a single mother, a former martial arts actress who quit her job to take care of her son. Now divorced,

Tan also acted in the film along with other famous names such as singer-songwriter Pete Teo, filmmaker James Lee and award-winning actor Bront Palarae.

The film, which costs RM643,000 to make, was funded by Chinese film company Heaven Pictures as well as the Hong Kong International Film Festival Society.

It was also supported by the Communications and Multimedia Ministry and the National Film Development Corporation (Finas) through its Digital Content Fund (DKD).

Past awards

This was not the first time Tan bagged an international award.

Her film ‘Love Conquers All' won the Tiger Award at the Rotterdam International Film Festival 2007 and the New Current Award at the Pusan International Film Festival 2006.

'Barbarian Invasion' is Tan's third feature film, and it's already bagged a grand award.

Well done, Tan Chui Mui and the team behind 'Barbarian Invasion'! We are extremely proud of you!
