Scientists Race Against Time To Develop Covid-19 Vaccine

Everyone is worried about the spread of Covid-19, especially as there is no cure for the virus as yet.

Groups of scientists from various countries including the United States and Australia are however racing against the clock to provide the world with a glimmer of hope.

AFP reported that the teams of scientists are using new technology to develop a vaccine in record time to combat the outbreak.

Vaccines take time to develop

Usually, a vaccine takes years to make.

Hours and hours of research and tests.“It is a high-pressure situation and there is a lot of weight on us,” said senior researcher Keith Chappell, who part of the group from Australia’s University of Queensland.

The Australian team is hoping to develop the vaccine in six months.

The team, along with groups of scientists from other countries are pushed along in their efforts by the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), a body established in 2017 to finance costly biotechnology research in the wake of an Ebola outbreak in West Africa.

Millions of dollars funnelled into vaccine search

CEPI aims to speed up the development of vaccines and is sponsoring millions of dollars into four projects around the world.

Among the technologies used by the various team include “messenger RNA” — instructions that tell the body to produce proteins, DNA-based technology and “molecular clamp” technology.

CEPI CEO Richard Hatchett, said that the hope would be to start clinical tests for the vaccines in just 16 weeks.

That is a lot of pressure in a short amount of time! We wish them all the best.
