Instagram Hides Number Of ‘Likes’ So That You Don’t Have To Feel Pressured

Goodbye peer pressure.

Instagram has been making a lot of changes to the app recently, and one of it is by introducing anti-bullying tools such as ‘restrict’ and also a notification message that pops up when one is about to post potentially harmful or hurtful comments.

This new tool was well-received and now, Instagram has moved on to another new feature that may not sit well with a lot of people (read: Instagram influencers): hiding the amount of likes on a post.

Apparently, this feature was introduced as part of a test back in May and affects users from certain countries such as Canada, Australia, Brazil, Ireland, Italy, Japan, and New Zealand, according to a report by the BBC.

To make things a little bit more official, the new feature was recently and formally announced by Instagram at the F8 developer conference in Los Angeles.

Now you don't have to feel inferior if your photos aren't getting as much likes as your peers.
“We hope this test will remove the pressure of how many likes a post will receive, so you can focus on sharing the things you love,” Mia Garlick, Facebook Australia and New Zealand director of policy, said in a statement.

But before you flip out at Instagram because you can’t show the whole world how many likes you have, you can always opt out of the new feature and see how many likes you’ve received.

Well, we think this new feature is not that bad. Imagine if Instagram decides to hide the number of followers instead. How lah all the influencers are going to ‘cari makan’ after that?

Do you think Instagram’s actually doing the right thing so that you don’t have to conform to society’s “perfect views” on social media? Or do you really prefer all your likes back?
