The past couple of weeks, the COVID-19 situation in the country is spiraling out of control.
With a recent revelation, it looks like our fight against the pandemic is going to be a long, painful and exhausting one.
Rapidly evolving virus
Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah has revealed that the new COVID-19 variants, including Delta, is now more infectious and can spread through the air.
Dr Noor Hisham told Malay Mail
that the Delta strain can spread through the air and infect an individual in as short as 15 seconds.
Previously, experts believed that an individual can be infected with the virus after being exposed to an infected patient for 15 minutes, but that's no longer the case.
"We are informed that with these new variants now, infection can happen within 15 seconds only, and also because it’s airborne," he was quoted as saying.
The sudden surge in infection since 26 June was due to the Delta strain, Dr Noor Hisham said.
To make matters worse, the coronavirus has been evolving rapidly as well, making it even harder to contain it.
"If we look at the infectiousness for a normal virus, the R0 or Rt is between 2.5 and 3.0, but the R0 or Rt for the Delta variant or variants that we have identified is much higher, that is between 5.0 and 8.0.
"Meaning, if 100 people are infected, within a short period of incubation, it can infect between 500 and 800 people," he was quoted as saying.
As such, Dr Noor Hisham has advised Malaysians to take greater precaution and get vaccinated as soon as possible.
