As Malaysians, we’re very proud to have a handful of athletes who have had very successful careers and are well-known internationally.
We’ve got our legendary shuttler Datuk Lee Chong Wei, the best squash player in the world; Datuk Nicol David, and the talented young Moto GP rider, Khairul Idham Pawi.
Soon, we might be able to add another name to that list.
Meet Wan Kuzain Wan Kamal
, an 18-year-old Malaysian lad born in Carbondale, Illinois.

Last week, Wan Kuzain created history when he made his professional football debut at the American United Soccer League, becoming the first ever Malaysian to ever play in the US football league, as reported by the New Straits Times
Wan Kuzain was picked as one of the starting midfielders for his club, Swope Park Rangers, in a match against OKC Energy FC at Kansas City, Missouri.
Dubbed as the “Malaysian Messi”, Wan Kuzain - clad in a number 75 jersey - showcased his fancy footwork in the 3-1 win before being substituted in the 75th minute.
His father Professor Dr. Wan Kamal Napi, who witnessed Wan Kuzain’s performance, said that his son’s debut performance in the second tier of the American football league was praised by coaches and teammates.
“Coaches and teammates praised him and felt that his first appearance was really good. I hardly praise him but after witnessing his performance, he deserves the credit,” Wan Kamal told Harian Metro
in an interview.
Who knows, given a few more years, Wan Kuzain may even ply his trade in the English Premier League.
We wish him all the best and may he continue to shine in his new club. Malaysia boleh
