You need to be extra careful the next time you pay with your credit card after dining out.
Before you key in your personal identification number (PIN), it is crucial that you take a closer look at the display screen on the credit card payment machine or it could really cost you.
In a report by The Star
, there have been instances where customers keyed in the amount to tip instead of their PIN without looking at the screen.
Some restaurants may have programmed their credit card payment machines to display the tipping amount by default.
Customers who are not careful would then assume that the usual procedure is required where they just key in their PIN and press ‘enter’.
However, other restaurants had reportedly been facing this issue after the bank upgraded the payment machines.
Consumers Association of Penang president S.M. Mohamed Idris spoke up about this and urged the relevant parties to rectify this problem.
So guys, do pay extra attention to the display screen before keying in your PIN and stop immediately when you see numbers appearing instead of asterisks.
Unless you do feel that the restaurant did an awesome job serving you and you want to give a generous tip, then by all means!
