June 10th is the day that football fans from all over the world will be anticipating for – it marks the start of the Euro 2016 football championship. The tournament will be hosted in France for one month where football stars from European nations will gather and battle it out to win the coveted champions title. 24 countries will compete in 51 matches in 10 different venues.
This will also be a great opportunity for fans to visit France and watch the matches live. The US government however has issued a warning
to alert its US citizens on the risk of terrorist attacks throughout the tournament. The warning stated that the terrorists may be targeting major events, tourist sites, restaurants, commercial centers and transportation lines which will have an influx in the number of tourists by summer. Everyone visiting France should always remain vigilant whenever in public areas and be aware of the surroundings.
The warning was issued probably due to the recent terrorist attacks in Brussels, Belgium as well as in France in November last year which happened nearby their national stadium, the Stade de France which took the lives of 130 civilians. Organizers of the Euro 2016 have also taken their own safety measures by carrying out a lot of mock suicide bombing attacks
near Lyon where six Euro 2016 matches were scheduled to take place. Among other venues that the match will take place are Saint Dennis, Marseilles, and Lille.
We strongly advise our fellow Malaysians who intend to visit France for Euro 2016 to be cautious of the surroundings especially in crowded areas as well inform your family members or friends of your whereabouts. Alternatively, you can also contact Wisma Putra
to notify them if you’re travelling there.
