To refresh your memory: one of the pointers listed in Pakatan Harapan’s manifesto states that housewives are entitled to a RM50 contribution from the government and two per cent from the husband’s salary.
The government is still working on implementing this proposal but of course, there have been a few hiccups along the way.
But what some Malaysians, especially those who practice polygamy, would like to know is, will it be applicable to more than one wife?
Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said that the RM50 contribution from the government will only be given to the first wife
“According to our religious beliefs, it is the husband's responsibility to ensure they are financially able to support another wife. Why should the Government be responsible for that instead?” Wan Azizah said in answering a query in the Parliament
“The Government's contribution is to further secure the future of housewives and their children in the event the family's breadwinner is struck by untoward incidents.”
It was reported that a memorandum on the housewife EPF is ready and will be tabled in the next Cabinet meeting.
