One of Pakatan Harapan’s pledges upon winning #GE14 was to introduce an Employees Provident Fund's (EPF) scheme for housewives.
Deputy Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Dr. Wan Azizah immediately started working on it after being appointed Women, Family and Community Development Minister.
The premise was that the government will contribute RM50
monthly to housewives while 2 per cent
will be contributed from their husband’s EPF.
Despite several hiccups along the way such as it was apparently illegal to take the 2 per cent from the husband’s EPF, the scheme has finally materialised after Wan Azizah launched the Housewife EPF programme named the Suri Incentive on Thursday as reported by The Star
The first phase of the new scheme will kick off this 15 August for eligible recipients in the e-Kasih database. RM40 will be contributed to their EPF accounts while the balance RM10 will go into their Social Security Organisation (Socso).
The 2 per cent contribution from husband’s EPF however, cannot be implemented now as the government will need to amend the EPF 1991 law to make it happen. Therefore, the government foresees that this will only happen in 2020.
So, housewives, the moment you’re all waiting for has finally arrived. Kudos to our government for introducing this scheme!
