The government is conducting studies and consulting relevant parties to decriminalise suicide, Astro Awani reported.
Currently, those attempting to take their own lives can be charged under Section 309 of the Penal Code, which carries a sentence of up to a year in jail, or a fine, or both.
Minister at the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Liew Vui Keong said the the process to change the law is taking some time to ensure that those suffering from mental health issues can get the assistance they need, and not be punished.
He made the statement at the parliament during a question and answer session.
"Overall, the government has prepared a research paper to be distributed to relevant parties for feedback to come up with a comprehensive national strategy.
"So, this comprehensive national strategy is necessary as we are getting feedback from the medical sector, education, media, welfare, religion, transportation and agriculture like what the World Health Organisation (WHO) had done," he said.
Hopefully, the changes will happen fast so people suffering from mental health issues can get help instead of being punished.
