Doctors: Vaping May Be Linked To Rare Lung Disease In Patient
The last time we put up a story about how vaping is linked to a rare illness diagnosed on a Malaysian teenager, a lot of you disagreed.

There were also a lot of comments about how vaping is a safer alternative compared to smoking cigarettes.

But this recent case in Paris will change your mind (probably).

Toxic metal poisoning

According to a report by news agency AFP, doctors in Paris, who were treating a patient with a rare lung disease, said that the case may be the first to be linked to vaping.

The patient reportedly had hard-metal pneumoconiosis, an illness typically found in people exposed to metals such as cobalt or tungsten.

These metals, according to the report, are typically used for tool sharpening or diamond polishing.

However, the weird thing was, this particular patient did not have any known exposure to hard metal, and because of that, the Clinical Professor of Pathology at Kirk Jones deduced that the use of an e-cigarette could be a possible cause.

A case study, published in the European Respiratory Journal, said that when researchers tested the patient’s e-cigarette, which was used with cannabis, they found cobalt in the vapour it released.

They also reportedly found several other toxic metals, namely nickel, aluminium, manganese, lead and chromium.

See how it is all related?

Permanent damage to the lungs

Rupal Shah, an assistant professor of medicine at UCSF Health, told AFP that the exposure to cobalt dust is extremely rare, outside of a few specific industries.

“This is the first known case of a metal-induced toxicity in the lung that has followed from vaping and it has resulted in long-term, probably permanent, scarring of the patient’s lungs,” Shah was quoted as saying.

Earlier this year, the World Health Organisation warned that electronic smoking devices were “undoubtedly harmful and should therefore be subject to regulation.”

No matter what your opinion is on vaping, this report should serve as a reminder that nothing is good for your health if you take/do it in excess ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
