Mandatory Face Scans For Those Who Want To Buy A Phone In China
You know how they say that Big Brother is watching you?

We don't know how or where, but they are generally watching you.

In China, they don't even hide the fact that they are, indeed, watching your every move.

Mandatory face scans

News agency AFP reported that the China government has made it compulsory for telecom operators in the country to collect face scans when registering new phone users at offline outlets.

The report said that the country’s industry and information technology ministry issued a notice in September this year on “safeguarding the legitimate rights and interests of citizens online”.

The notice spelled out that telecom operators should use “artificial intelligence and other technical means” to verify people's identities when they register for a new phone number.

“In next steps, our ministry will continue to increase supervision and inspection, and strictly promote the management of real-name registration for phone users,” read the notice.

Chinese social media has a mixed reaction to this announcement with some worrying about the leaking of their biometric data while others applaud the move.

And you thought getting a copy of our IC when registering for a new phone number in Malaysia is bad.
